Meghan McCain Reveals Her Dad John's Beloved Dog Burma Died: 'She Would Never Leave His Side'

Meghan McCain and her family are in mourning again after John McCain‘s beloved dog died.

Eight months after the former Arizona senator passed away at age 81 from stage four brain cancer, Meghan, 34, announced in an Instagram post on Monday that his Chesapeake Bay retriever Burma sadly died.

The pup, who was originally a birthday present to John, had quickly become a member of the family and was a loyal companion to the late politician throughout his life and during his final days, Meghan explained.

“Every time I think my heart can’t be broken any further…our dog Burma was my father’s birthday present years ago and was absolutely and truly devoted to him,” she began the emotional post, which featured a photo of John smiling while Burma sat closely next to him.

“She would never leave his side, followed him around every single step when he would walk around our ranch, slept by his side every night and we always said Chesapeake Bay retrievers were the most affectionate breed of dogs,” Meghan explained. “The love this dog gave him was equal to a family member.”

In a final note, Meghan said she hoped the family’s pet was now reunited with her dad and doing the activities she loved the most.

“I love you Burma and hope you’re in heaven jumping into creeks, chasing sticks and fish with Dad. 💔” she wrote.

Following her first post, The View co-host shared another series of photos to Instagram on Monday — this time, from her Nov. 2018 wedding where Burma was captured in many of the family photos.

In each photo Meghan attached, Burma consistently sat right at John’s feet alongside the McCain family members. “Burma on my wedding day,” Meghan captioned the since-deleted snaps.

She then shared two videos that were taken by a family friend featuring Burma running into a stream to fetch a giant stick.

“Thank you for these @jhause – ♥ forever to my dads dog Burma. You brought us all so much love and joy,” Meghan wrote alongside the clips.

John, a known animal lover, and his family would often share photos and videos of Burma.

Three days after announcing his cancer diagnosis in July 2017, Burma joined him and Meghan for a hike in Arizona.

“Amazing hike with Dad @SenJohnMcCain this morning,” Meghan wrote on Twitter. “Thank you all for your best wishes!”

A month later, the former senator shared a sweet video of his pup excitedly gallivanting through a creek. “Burma at her best!” he captioned the short clip.

In the time since his passing, Meghan has struggled to come to terms with her father’s death and often posts tributes to him on social media, counting the days since he’s been gone.

Just yesterday, she shared a photo of her dad and captioned it, “I miss you the most on Sundays.” Sundays were especially significant to the father-daughter pair, as they would have weekly phone calls on that day.

Besides memorializing her father, Meghan has also recently been spending her time defending him amid attacks from President Donald Trump.

Last month, after Trump, 72, attacked the former Arizona senator over his alleged involvement with the Russian investigation, Meghan spoke up on The View and slammed Trump for spending his weekend speaking poorly of her late father, whom she referred to as a “great man.”

“ spends his weekend obsessing over great men because — he knows it and I know it and all of you know it — he will never be a great man,” she stated. “My father was his kryptonite in life, he’s his kryptonite in death.”

“All of us have love and families and when my father was alive up until adulthood we would spend our time together cooking, hiking, fishing, really celebrating life and I think it’s because he almost died,” she said referring to his time as a prisoner of war. “And I just thought, ‘Your life is spent on weekends not with your family, not with your friends, but obsessing — obsessing over great men you could never live up to.’”

“That tells you everything you needed to know about his pathetic life,” Meghan added.
