Stevie Nicks, the spellbinding Fleetwood Mac frontwoman, became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice Friday with a little help from Harry Styles.
Nicks, 70, who balanced a successful solo career featuring hits like “Edge of Seventeen” with her Fleetwood Mac duties, addressed the milestone in a wide-ranging speech that mentioned everything from her pre-fame jobs cleaning houses to shots of tequila.
“I’m hoping… that what I am doing is opening up the door for other women to go like, ‘Hey man, I can do it!’” she said. “It’s gonna be hard. But I know that there’s somebody out there that will be able to do it because I’m going to give you all the instructions.”
Nicks was inducted by Styles, 25, who also joined the singer on stage for a duet of “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” her 1981 single which originally featured Tom Petty.
“’Dreams’ was the first song that I knew all the words to before I really knew what the words meant,” Styles told the crowd at New York City’s Barclays Center. “I thought it was a song about the weather. But I knew that it was a beautiful song about the weather.”
He continued, “She’s so wise and serene. She sees all the romance and drama in the world and she celebrates it.”

“She is a magical gypsy godmother who occupies the in-between. It’s a space that can and will only ever be hers,” he said, joking that “on Halloween one in seven people dress as Stevie Nicks.”
“She is both an adjective and a verb. To quote my father, ‘That was rather Stevie Nicks,’” he said. “And to quote my mother, ‘I Stevie Nicksed that s— so hard.’”
Nicks raved over her friendship with the former One Direction boy bander but mistakenly referred to his band as ‘NSYNC.
Realizing her mistake, she admitted she’s “never gonna live that down.”
“Well I like One Direction, too!” she joked backstage. “When Harry decided to make a record, he could’ve gone one of two ways. He could’ve made a really serious pop record, which would have been much less of a risk, or he could have made a rock ‘n roll record and take a risk, and he did… This beautiful child should’ve been born in 1948, too, because he just fits in with all of us.”
More than 20 men, including all four Beatles, have been inducted into the Hall of Fame twice, first with their respective bands, and again as solo artists.
Nicks, who was first inducted in 1998 with Fleetwood Mac, took the stage with four songs, including her duet with Styles, “Leather and Lace” with former boyfriend Don Henley, “The Edge of Seventeen,” and “Stand Back.”
After the rollicking performance of “Stand Back,” which kicked off the induction ceremony, Nicks revealed she was wearing the original cape from the song’s 1983 video.
“It’s perfect, not one thread is out of place,” Nicks told the crowd. “It was worth every bit of that $3,000.”
Nicks added that her frugal mother would be impressed by the recycled cape, an accessory that’s become a signature part of the singer’s bewitching stage presence.

Nicks’ induction was announced in December, joining fellow inductees Radiohead, Def Leppard, the Cure, Janet Jackson, the Zombies and Roxy Music.
“I have a lot to say about this~ but I will save those words for later,” Nicks shared on Twitter after learning of the honor. “For now I will just say, I have been in a band since 1968. To be recognized for my solo work makes me take a deep breath and smile. It’s a glorious feeling.”
The 34th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will air April 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, HBO Go, HBO Now, and On Demand.
